This is a pretty good article.

It advocates for some kind of work permit for whoever wants one, to work in the US.  I agree with that.  People who come here to work provide so many benefits for US citizens.

However, the author also advocates for no immediate mechanism to tie the work permits to citizenship, and concurrently, elimination of birthright citizenship.  Both of those, I really disagree with.  Aren’t there parts of Europe where there are basically slums of immigrant non-citizens, who do not assimilate and yet also do not leave?  Whose children are not even born citizens?  That just seems really un-American.  Second class citizens, in effect.

I think it would be better to allow the work permit to only be renewable for a certain number of years, then the person must either begin the process toward citizenship or leave.
